Christmas

In our family, Christmas Eve is the big, formal event. We have a ham dinner, a white elephant gift exchange, some games and then the traditional opening of one gift from Grandma. And then there is the traditional "feel my guns" moment that I am subjected to by my brother-in-law every time I am in town. Oh boy. This year I obliged him .... and had my nephew take a picture of it promising to put it on my blog! Ha! Take that Doug. :)

We played an M&M game and it was a riot! As soon as you roll doubles with the dice, you want to scoop M&Ms from the bowl into your cup as fast as possible to get as many as possible until someone else rolls doubles and then it is their turn. And you have to scoop the M&Ms with a knife. My mom was a hoot!

Christmas Day is spent at my sister Jill's house, eating finger foods, getting tours of her kids' Christmas loot and watching movies. This is the year I introduced Jill to North & South.

And then, here are the pictures of my mom's reaction to receiv
ing the Halford & Brooks' Family Album. I think it is safe to say she loved it. :)

Life List Achievement: Make a Family History Book to Share

Well, I did it! I completed another life list item. I made a family history book to share with all my family! There are nearly 800 photos in this family photo album and it has five generations in it! Many years ago, my Uncle Rob put this original family album together and gave it to my Grandma Bertha. When she passed away she gave it to my Uncle Doyle. I've had very little contact with him over the years since I left for college and began working ... that is until May of 2007. He allowed my sister and I to scan all of the photos in this album and since then I've been working on cropping those pictures and labeling them. And then over the last few months I've put all those photos into a book and had it published. In all, I ordered 12 copies of it - for my mom, aunt, sisters and cousins. It is amazing! I've really come to know my ancestors and extended family that are in this album (or at least to the extent that you can get to know someone via photo). It's been an amazing experience. Enjoy the photos and the video of the book.

If you are related to me via the Halfords or Brooks' then let me know and I'll send you a link to website where you can purchase your own family album!

P.S. Don't mention this to my mom yet... she's getting it for Christmas this year and she doesn't know about it. :)
P.P.S. I made the book using the Booksmart program via www.blurb.com

Snow Days

I just have the best news ever. Yes, yes, you'll think I'm silly for the little things that I get so excited over. But hey - it doesn't take much to make me happy. :)

First, today was the second work day in a row where we were told to leave work early because of the snow storm. Friday we left early at 4 because of a snow storm and then again today the whole university was shut down at 2 o'clock because of another snow storm! Woo hoo! This hasn't happened in ages... if ever! Yes!

Second, I made it up my street! Yes. I bought new tires earlier this fall and I actually made it up my slightly inclined street to my house after coming home from work. They hadn't plowed my neighborhood yet so it was amazing cuz there was like 4 inches of new snow on my street. Last winter I would have been parking at the bottom of my street and walking up.

That's it. That's my happy snow days' news. :)

By the way, have a merry Christmas! I'm headed home to Idaho tomorrow. Hopefully I won't get stuck in the snow storm but no worries for me - if ye are prepared, ye shall not fear - so I am taking my sleeping bag, my backpacking stove, a truckload of food, my warmest clothes and ski gear and maybe even my snow shoes! I should be well prepared for this treacherous drive before me.

2nd Annual Christmas Music Soiree

This year's soiree was even bigger than last years... and the major difference between the two parties? I played the piano! I played my song, Carol of the Bells, twice. Once at the beginning of the party with no one paying any particular attention to me and I didn't make any mistakes. The second time I played was at the end of the party and this time I had two people looking over my shoulder so I made several mistakes and then when I finished all my friends that "weren't listening to me" applauded me. I was so embarassed. I ran into the kitchen.

Oh it was a riot to sing the old classic, children's Christmas carols - like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman. Who knew that single adults in the
ir late 20s and early 30s could get such a kick out of singing those songs!

And then the food. Oh the food. It was so divine - stuffed mushrooms, pumpkin spice bread, marbled chocolate bark, cheese ball and crackers, summer sausage, Russian tea, and then cranberry cake with butter sauce. Mmmmm.

Good friends, good music, good food, good times.

The Nutcracker

A couple of my friends and I took full advantage of the 2-for-1 that I received for completing The Nutcracker 5K last Saturday. It was fabulous!! This definitely a ballet designed for me!

A prince
The magical Snow Land
Snow
Snowflakes
The magical Land of the Sugarplum Fairy
Candy

The music was beautiful and the dancing was fabulous ... even for little old Provo.

I passed my PHR Exam!

Well, today was the big day that I have been preparing for since the end of August: my exam for the Professional in Human Resources certification. And guess what. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the title gives it away.

I PASSED!!!*

*Well, that is my preliminary results... technically I'm not suppose to announce it until I receive the official score from HRCI (Human Resources Certification Institute).

Big Announcement + Hugs = Flying Hot Chocolate

I heard the best news tonight!! My previous roommate, Jewels, is getting married!! And we were so excited about it that when we hugged each either we knocked some hot chocolate off an ironing board and send one mug flying down the staircase getting hot chocolate all over the walls, the carpeted stairs, the entry way floor at the bottom of the stairs and the front door... not to mention the hot chocolate on the ironing board and the wall and carpet by it! We stood there frozen in place for a moment and then burst out laughing while we ran for wet rags to start cleaning it up! And all this occurred while the girl that was buying her housing contract was there to check out the place and meet the roommates! Thankfully she still bought the contract despite our wildness!

Nutcracker 5K

Today my friends and I ran in the Nutcracker 5K.... okay I'd better clarify, I walked and ran... yes, I ran. I know. Miracles do happen. And wow! I am pretty sore from it. Who knew that running used different muscles than walking. Heh.

Best part about the Fun Run? We rented tutus and wore them while we ran/walked. Awesome! Even Jed wore a tutu although he didn't pay for it. He told Lindsey that if she rented it for him that he would wear it. Ha! What a character. :)

Thanksgiving in Logan

Ah Thanksgiving... aka a day of gluttony. And that is what it was for me - a day of gluttony. I didn't go for a walk or a bike ride, like I did last year. I just worked on family history stuff, ate some food, helped clean up, ate some more food, watched a couple movies, ate some more food, watched another movie, at THE Thanksgiving dinner, helped clean up, ate some pumpkin pie, watched another movie. Whoa. Yup. That was it. But it sure was heavenly.

Friday my mom and I participated in Black Friday shopping and then yesterday we did a little more shopping and visited my mom's Aunt Evelyn. I bought a digital voice recorder so I could record the visit with Aunt Evelyn. We went hoping to see if she knew any stories about my Grandpa Brooks that my mom didn't know. Unfortunately, she didn't know much but she knew a little, and then she says she has some pictures she'll share with me! I shared the pictures that I had with her. And so, after the holidays, hopefully I'll be able to visit her again and scan some photos!! :) It was successful. :)

My Dad's Wedding

I went to Boise this weekend to attend my dad's wedding. I hadn't met his wife until his wedding day, but she seems VERY nice and they seem to be very happy. I am super excited for him. The wildest part of him getting married is that he will be moving to Blackfoot, Idaho in the spring! Isn't that crazy? For as long as I have been alive, plus years before that, my parents have lived in or around Boise, give or take an hour. It will be wild. :)

We also celebrated my nephew, Chandler's, 9th birthday. One would have thought we had an early Thanksgiving since we ate so much food that day... between dad's wedding and Chandler's pizza and cake and ice cream party. Good grief! :)

I also won a wicked game of darts. Yes!

Mundane Monday - Politics & News of Today

Considering that Election Day is tomorrow and what all is at stake I feel inclined to write a little bit about my views. I'll mention it now: I am not well versed in things political. Honestly, I haven't taken much interest in it - that is until I need to take a stand in order to maintain my religious freedom, my morals/values and beliefs, my freedom of speech and all else that I hold dear. And I'll be short in my writing.

1. The Presidential Election of 2008 - John McCain vs. Barack Obama
First, I have a couple of guiding principles when I vote on a presidential candidate... (a lot of those happen to mirror what my friend, Jesse, put on her blog)
  • "Therefore, choose you by the voice of this people, judges, that ye may be judged according to the laws which have been given you by our fathers, which are correct, and which were given them by the hand of the Lord. Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law - to do your business by the voice of the people." (Book of Mormon, Mosiah 29:25-26)
  • "A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have." ~Thomas Jefferson
  • "We, the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow men who pervert the Constitution." ~Abraham Lincoln
  • Will this candidate uphold the laws of God? His eternal truths? Those values I believe in? And will he uphold the Constitution of the United States of America? And the other correct laws that have been set forth previously?
The most divisive issue that falls within my above-mentioned principles, in the past, tended to be abortion (at least in my opinion), but this year marriage between one man and one woman happens to be on the ballot in California. I believe in traditional marriage between one man and one woman. Since my beliefs on these moral issues generally dictate who I vote for, that makes my decision pretty cut and dry - if ever there is a time where the presidential candidates agree on those moral, ethical, and eternal truth issues, then I will have a much harder time choosing and I will have to do a lot more homework.

2. Proposition 8 in California - Amending the California Constitution to Define Marriage Between One Man and One Woman

If I were a resident of California I would vote yes to support this proposition - in support of keeping marriage between one man and one woman. I'm not a resident and I will not be voting on it, but I have friends in California. Those friends have been bringing the campaign here to Utah in order to solicit help with campaigning. At first, I didn't fully understand why I needed to be involved since I am not a California resident, but what happens in California tends to trickle to the rest of the nation in years to come.

This issue seems to be the hot issue of this election year. Even my church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has come out and made statements in support of Proposition 8 - which the church never takes a stand on political issues. This is huge. So huge that the opposition has resorted to violence and labeling - even to the point of calling supporters bigots and intolerant. Let's have a quick diversion to the dictionary:

Bigotry:

1. stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own.

Tolerance:

1. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own, freedom from bigotry.

2. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own.
3. interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc., foreign to one's own; a liberal, undogmatic viewpoint.

It appears as though the opposition is demanding uniformity, not tolerance.

I believe 100% that individuals with same-gender-attraction should have all the same civil rights and opportunities for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as the next citizen on the street. Because Proposition 8 is a moral issue and an issue to protect my right to religious freedom, freedom of speech and most tangibly, my right as a future parent to teach tolerance, respect and love for all people from all walks of life in the manner I deem most appropriately - I have to take a stand. Legalization of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts has proven that all of those rights are taken away from those with my beliefs.

Last Ride of the Season

It probably will be the last ride of my bike's first season, but it WAS BEAUTIFUL!! So beautiful, I had to stop and take a picture of it. I went up the Provo River Trail. The trees down in the lower portion of the trail still had a lot of their leaves on, but they had also dropped a lot of leaves.... all over the trail. It was amazing. Best ride yet. And such nice weather! Who would ever thought I could ride on November 1? In short-sleeves? We usually have our first snowfall by now... well technically I guess we had that a couple weeks ago, but I don't count it because I was out of town (#1) and it didn't stick (#2). But no worries. I will document the first snowfall and put it on my blog... like I always do. :)

Happy Halloween!

Jen and I won a costume contest this year at the big Halloween party we went to! We both got gift cards to iTunes. How sweet is that? She dressed up as Cruella De Vil and suggested that I dress up as a dalmatian. How stinkin' cute are we? We talked Jana into come with us to the party and dressing up as her playing card that she was at work - her team all dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland. Super fun party.

Perk of my Job

So... here is one more reason why I loooooooove my job: I got the royal treatment at the football game today - the BYU vs. UNLV game. We won - 42 to 35. It was a close game though! We were neck and neck the whole time until the very end.

But anyway, since I am the HR Consultant over the Athletics department Janie offered to give me a tour of the game and what all the Athletic personnel are doing during the game to make sure it is running smoothly and everything is getting done. I saw the marketing personnel making sure that all the corporate sponsor contract terms were being met, I saw the marketing guy that writes the script for all the entertainment in action, I saw the video guys filming the game so the coaches can use the footage i
n coaching, I saw the sound system people, the announcers (both the internal and the fan one), I saw the Cougar Club people in action entertaining all the big donors in the fancy-schmancy tents and Cougar Blue rooms, I even went down on the field to see the equipment managers, trainers and operations guys in action. It was awesome!

Janie was a most excellent tour hostess. And then she took me into the Legacy tent where we got to munch on some Chocolate fountain fondue and I got to eat my Tucano's catered lunch up in the press box. Pretty cool, huh? When will I ever get to do anything like that again? Oh - and I got two free Shade t-shirts. I'm wearing one right now... as I write this entry. :)

Best Sabbath in a Long Time

Wow. Today was probably the most spiritual Sabbath I have had in a long time. I felt the Spirit so strongly in Relief Society. I was literally crying. I even attempted to make a comment on the lesson while crying... that is not an easy thing to do. The Spirit was testifying to my heart, my soul, that I am blessed. That everything will work out just as everything has worked out in the past. Just looking back on the experience of my failed engagement reminds me that Heavenly Father is in the details of my life. He literally put my life back together again after the engagement went south and he gave me strength to not break down emotionally every time a friend would ask me why I was still in Provo or how married-life was. (FYI - this was six years ago and I was suppose to marry in December and move to Ohio immediately following our marriage. When it went south, I chose to stay in Provo and in my same ward, that is why I got questions from friends when school started again in January.)

And then Sunday School ended phenomenally. Although I didn't understand the full meaning of the "fork-in-the-road" story until after I got home from church. It was when I called my mom for my Sunday phone call, that the full meaning of the story hit me like a ton of bricks.

Ever since my engagement failed six years ago, I've been asking myself the question, "Why did that happen? Why did I feel like I got a positive answer to my prayers with regard marrying him when Heavenly Father knew it would go south?" Because I did get a positive answer to my prayers. I can't deny it. Heavenly Father was in the details of my life even then - even down to telling me which classes to take and when so I could be ready to move to Ohio come December. But then why, after answering my prayer and confirming my desire to marry this young man, did it go south? Of course I could have been misinterpreting, but I don't think I was.

Well, this story, that I am about to quote here was the answer to my questions. My questions that I have had for six years. Heavenly Father truly does work in His own time-table. He truly does answer prayers. And He answers prayers in a way that I will understand best and will speak to my heart and my mind (meaning makes sense and feels good).

So now for the story that answers all my questions. It is by Matthew Holland and you can find it in the July 2005 New Era magazine on page 27, called "Wrong Roads and Revelation."

“Matt, let’s go to the Colorado River,” Dad suggested. I was seven years old, and my family was visiting both sets of grandparents in St. George, Utah. Eager to see the mighty Colorado, I yelled, “Great! Let me get my skipping stones.”

Little did I know that he meant we were going to the Grand Canyon traveling over cow trails. Yes, we would see the Colorado River, but we would be on a cliff about a mile (1.5 km) above it. There would be no skipping of stones.

Grandpa Holland loaned us his truck and gave us a homemade map and a set of directions to help us find our way on a little-used dusty path along the back roads of the Utah-Arizona border. As we turned off the paved road, lumbered through the desert, climbed a set of hills, crossed another desert, went up another set of hills, I wondered how Grandpa or anyone else ever found this place.

We reached the overlook of the Grand Canyon late in the afternoon. After looking at the spectacular view and launching a few stones as far as I could throw, we got back into Grandpa’s old truck and started the trek home.

It was dusk, and we had only gone a bumpy mile or two when we came to a fork in the road. We stopped. Dad was not certain which trail we had come in on. He knew he had to make the right decision. There wasn’t much light left, light he desperately needed to ensure he could make the correct turns the rest of the way home.

Wasting time on a wrong road now meant we would face the difficult task of making our way home in the dark.

As we did whenever we had a family problem or concern, we prayed. After we both said amen, Dad turned and asked me what I thought we should do. I answered and said, “All during the prayer, I just kept feeling, ‘Go to the left.’ ”

Dad responded, “I had the exact same impression.”

This was my first experience receiving and recognizing revelation.

We started down the dirt road to the left. We had traveled only about 10 minutes when our road came to a sudden dead-end. My father promptly whipped the truck around, roared back to that fork in the path, and started down the road to the right. Fortunately, there was still just enough light to help us navigate the web of dirt roads that would take us home.

We were almost back to St. George, now on roads my father knew well, and the thick darkness of the night was lit by pinholes of thousands of stars.

I was troubled. With my head resting on my dad’s leg and my legs stretched across the seat, I asked, “Dad, why did we both feel like Heavenly Father told us to go down the road to the left when it was the wrong road?”

My dad said, “Matty, I’ve been thinking and silently praying about that same thing all the way home, because I really did feel a very distinct impression to take the road to the left.”

I was relieved that my first experience with revelation had a “second witness.”

He continued, “The Lord has taught us an important lesson today. Because we were prompted to take the road to the left, we quickly discovered which one was the right one. When we turned around and got on the right road, I was able to travel along its many unfamiliar twists and turnoffs perfectly confident I was headed in the right direction.

“If we had started on the right road, we might have driven for 30 minutes or so, become uneasy with the unfamiliar surroundings, and been tempted to turn back. If we had done that, we would have discovered the dead-end so late that it would have been too dark to find our way back in totally unfamiliar territory.”

I understood and have never forgotten the lesson my Heavenly Father and earthly father taught me that afternoon. Sometimes in response to prayers, the Lord may guide us down what seems to be the wrong road—or at least a road we don’t understand—so, in due time, He can get us firmly and without question on the right road. Of course, He would never lead us down a path of sin, but He might lead us down a road of valuable experience. Sometimes in our journey through life we can get from point A to point C only by taking a short side road to point B. We had prayed that we could make it safely home that day, and we did.

So now I know. Now I know that Heavenly Father took me down that dead-end (failed-engagement) path in order for me to know without a shadow of a doubt that I am on the right path now... the right path for me... right now. I have no room for doubt or fear. Only faith. Faith that Heavenly Father has a plan for me and that everything truly will work out in the end.

Normally, I don't post something this personal on my blog... but I've felt prompted to do it this time. I hope I was prompted to do so because someone that reads my blog will also find meaning and answers in my testimony of this most spiritual Sunday.

24 Hours of Moab

Jen, Jed and I went down to Moab this past weekend to help out with the 24 Hours of Moab mountain biking race. Jen rode in this race last year with her team (whom we were supporting this year) but decided it was too crazy of a race... to be riding in the wee hours of the night and have your headlamp and back up flash light all run out of batteries. Jen and Jed took pictures and I helped out as a Registrar for the event. It was crazy!

We arrived Friday night and set up camp with the team and then headed into dinner - which was organized and put on by a couple of wives of the team members - they fed 50 people... every meal of the weekend plus some hot soup for the riders that had to ride in the middle of the night. The race truly is a 24 hour race... as in you have a team (or not) and take turns riding ... you want to get as many laps as possible in the 24 hours so you can win the prize.

Anyway, there were some terrible winds. I swear it was a literal sandstorm down there... the wind blew all Friday night and it blew sand up and under the fly of our tent so I would wake up to sand pelting my face. I did my work for 8 hours on Saturday in the main tent... and unfortunately for me, the wind blew the sand in the two sides of the tent that were open, but since the other two sides were blocked off... it just stayed in the tent... check out my VERY dirty face in the pic below. I was dirtier than the riders!! You can see how the riders all picked up the dust for us in the tent... see the pic with them all running? They started the race with a run in order to break up the riders so they weren't all starting at the same time... they don't use waves or heats for this race.

But I did get to rinse off in a "shower" that the event provided. And Saturday night was much more pleasant because the 35 mph winds finally disappeared. Then we came back early on Sunday so I could make it to my church meeting by 4:00.

You know what is kind of crazy
about this event? It's not actually held in Moab... it is held out in the boonies off a dirt road so we basically stayed in a city of cars, tents, camp-trailers, and a stage ... there were several thousand people there.

Time to Retire this Blog

I regret to inform you all, that I've decided it is time to retire this blog. I blogged on here for nearly 11 years! It's crazy to t...
